Description:

American agave blooms once in its lifetime. Near the end of its lifespan, it sprouts a stalk that could reach 10 m, unveiling a yellow flower. Most of the plant parts is useful, for example the tough leaf fibers can be woven into mats and ropes, while its moisture-laden content is used to create various alcohols.

Toxicity:

The sap of this plant contains irritants like calcium oxalate crystals and acrid oils, which could cause dermatitis when comes in direct contact with the skin. The sap initially causes a rash, creating small pimples that may weep and then burst. Furthermore, the tips of its leaves are extremely sharp. It is important to take caution with this plant as this has often been the way the toxin is introduced under the skin. Most cases of dermatitis from this plant will only produce minor symptoms.

Tips for Planting and Watering Needs:

Plant in full sun during the mid to late September when the highest temperature reaches 35 °C. Water once daily during early winter. During the colder days of winter, you could water once every two to three days. Make sure not to water when there is rain. During early summer water once a day, while during the hotter days of summer water twice daily in the early morning, preferably before sun rise, and after sun set. Despite its tolerance to arid condition, agave plant does best when watered regularly, especially during growing season. A good watering guideline is to water immediately if the leaves begin to droop.
