Best Potting Soil Mix?
A potting soil mix is a medium used to grow plants. The mix should contain all the essential nutrients a plant needs to thrive.
What is it made of?
The core mix consists of:
1/3 Compost – 1/3 Peat Moss – 1/3 Perlite – (Live Earth Worm 5 to 10 per plant)
(If you have a pot that is 10 liters you will need 3.3 liters of compost, 3.3 liters of peat moss, and 3.3 liters of perlite.)
Compost – Decomposed organic matter by a process called composting. (Think of it as plant food)
Peat Moss – Mainly from the decomposition sphagnum moss (a plant). Has high water retention, sterile, and doesn’t compact (benefiting drainage by creating voids for water and air to pass through). One downside is that it contains almost zero nutritional value.
Perlite – Crushed volcanic rock that is heated to 1000 °C releasing trapped air inside, causing it to expand and pop. This creates voids and pores, in the rock, that helps in retaining water in the soil for an extended period.
Live Earth Worm – Red Wiggler worms constantly add nutrients to the potting mix with their castings, improve drainage of the mix by their channeling and burrowing, and improve soil structure & productivity.
